london loves

so the dust has settled on yesterday's events a little, and we've all had time to think things over.
London and it's people have impressed me so much in a few short hours. no mass panic, just pragmatism and looking out for each other, steadily sorting everything out and getting the job done. much of the tube and transport is up and working fine and dandy this morning, thankyouverymuch. and major incident planning seems to have kicked in pretty well - i'm sure things could have been a lot worse. although not for those poor people and their families who *were* caught in the worst of it. my thoughts go out to you, whoever you may be.............
and i stick two fingers up to terrorism! so you thought this would bring us to our knees did you? so you thought we'd be scared and hiding in our houses? well screw you, whoever you are, because look what has happened: you have made us stick together and care about random strangers (yes, i *am* talking about the same london where people avoid eye contact on the tubes), and you have made us EVEN MORE DETERMINED to live life as we do, to change nothing and enjoy our freedoms to the most.
hell, you couldn't even disrupt the transport system as much as a few of the wrong sort of leaves.
we aren't afraid as much as annoyed and defiant. this morning i am back in work, sipping at a hot cup of tea, and i even got on a number 30 bus. IN YOUR FACE.
as so many have said, this little city has seen so much and been hurt so much worse, and still we pick ourselves up and carry on.
********************************
left work early yesterday to face a long journey home. which wasn't that bad actually. walked for an hour and a quarter to manor house, where we hopped on 2 buses straight home (via a detour into tesco). i reckon my estimate of a 2 and a half hour walk was quite accurate. eminently doable, and nice to know i know the way.
it was very strange walking through london in the afternoon though. strangely subdued feeling in the air, much quieter than normal despite the throng of walking people. maybe it was the lack of traffic noise. i don't know.
the 123 bus is normally a hotbed of inane chatter, but last night and this morning there was silence. very weird. tottenham / walthamstow is a mixed bag of characters and races. i haven't spotted any dubious looks / attitudes yet, and i hope i won't do. let us not let them win, eh?
